FRANK SINATRA’S PASSION FOR PAINTING

Frank SinatraFrank Sinatra won every award a singer and actor can get. But he kept another talent hidden away from the public.

For 10 to 15 years, probably starting sometime in the 1970s, Sinatra spent considerable time working in an artist's studio at his Palm Springs, Calif., home. The result of his love of art is on display in "Frank Sinatra: Paintings." Sinatra began painting clowns, but in the 1980s he got serious about his art, which his work from then into the 1990s was most clearly influenced by the bright colors and abstract shapes of Mark Rothko, Robert Mangold and Ellsworth Kelly.

The paintings are untitled, except for the dominant colors Sinatra used, such as red and black, green and white, white and brown, red white and blue, green and red, etc. One of the paintings shows recognizable shapes from nature with the Sun.

This private collection of (Untitled) paintings was given as a gift from Frank Sinatra to his best friend and confidant Jilly Rizzo before Jilly died in 1992 from a drunk driver. Click here to jump to the Jilly Rizzo BIO below.

BIOGRAPHY OF JILLY RIZZO

Jilly Rizzo
Ermenigildo Rizzo (May 6, 1917 – May 6, 1992), nicknamed Jilly, was a restaurateur and entertainer. A long time friend of Frank Sinatra, Rizzo made cameo appearances in several of his films. He was also a frequent guest on Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In, where he would recite one liners in his monotone New York accent. During the 1970s, his night-club was torn down and replaced with Dean Martin's restaurant, Dino's.

Jilly Rizzo was killed by a drunk driver on his 75th birthday in Rancho Mirage, California. He is survived by two sons, William and Joseph, one daughter Abby and two grandchildren, Kacey and Joseph.
